The Tenacious Spy : William Morris Jones

We received a letter from author Karen Arthur about her newly published book titled: The Tenacious Spy: The Story of William Morris Jones.

I first encountered him when I co-authored The True Story of Wainfleet With Lies by William Thomas. At the time there was very little information available about Jones, but he seemed to be one of those larger-than-life individuals. Quite out of the blue, his son contacted me saying that he had his father’s personal papers and that a book needed to be written. He was right! After delving through 13 boxes of papers, photographs, letters, classified documents, etc., I realized this was a writer’s dream and this book is the end result.

Jones was born next door to you in Digby and after many dangerous and exciting events during WWI, he emerged a decorated hero and went on to serve the British as a spy during WWII. He retired to a farm beside the Welland River in Ontario and this became my contact with him.

Hope your Society finds him interesting. I will be presenting the book to the Wainfleet Historical Society here in Ontario.

Family Photo Workshop – March 3rd

The Bear River Historical Society is hosting a Family Photo workshop on Sat March 3^rd, from 1-4 pm, at our new location at the Oakdene Centre in Bear River. Pre-register for $12, for an afternoon of fun learning how to date old photos, and place people in your family tree. Registration includes handouts, worksheets and refreshments. Anyone with an interest in their unknown ancestors, genealogy, old pictures, fashion history, or photography will likely be interested in this workshop presented by Socio-Costumologist Jenny Milligan.

Strategic Development Initiative Application Deadline
The Canada Cultural Investment Fund (CCIF) is calling for proposals for its Strategic Initiatives component.

ANSM Board Strategic Planning

This fall the ANSM board, with support from managing director Anita Price and arts governance specialist consultant Barbara Richman, will be undertaking a strategic planning process. This process will be built on a review of the strategic plan 2008-2011. It will incorporate elements of that plan yet to be undertaken, as well as recommendations from the ANSM review of A Treasured Past, A Precious Future: A Heritage Strategy for Nova Scotia, 2008-2013. The ANSM strategic plan 2008-2011 and response to the Heritage Strategy can be viewed and downloaded on our website.

The renewed ANSM strategy will be circulated to members later in the year.

Conference Speakers Gift Legacy Project

At this year’s conference, Beyond the Labels, we gave a donation on behalf of our speakers to the Tatamagouche Area Trails Association (TATA). Our intention was to provide a tangible legacy gift to the host community of Tatamagouche. The Butter Trail linking our conference venue at the Tatamagouche Centre to the heart of the town was an ideal project to support.

The TATA is very grateful for our donation. They are using it to build a ramp or stairway from the lawn of the centre to the Butter trail to give visitors easy access to the trail head.

We are hosting a great CCI workshop November 16 & 17, 2011 at the Glooscap Heritage Centre in Millbrook. It will focus on the preservation of material culture in the context of Aboriginal cultural centres. For workshop details see our website.

The Old Sydney Society is presenting “Ghosts and Legends of Historic
Sydney.”

Come soar with the Spirits of Sydney throughout our enchanted North

Congratulations Doris Eaton on your new book!
A Lifetime of Rug Hooking was released this June. Doris was instrumental in organizing the Rug Hooking Guild of Nova Scotia, and has had her rugs exhibited at the DesBrisay Museum in Bridgewater and Mount Saint Vincent University. Her book is available through Nimbus Publishing.

Strategic Development Initiative

A heads up on this year’s SDI application deadline of August 31st at 4pm. SDI is a grant program of Communities, Culture and Heritage which “encourages ‘partners-in-heritage’ to develop projects that build on a community’s assets and strengths.” Visit http://www.gov.ns.ca/ to view the program description and application information.

The Canada Cultural Investment Fund (CCIF) is calling for proposals for its Strategic Initiatives component.

The deadline is October 1, 2011. Since 2010-2011, Strategic Initiatives, one of the four components of the CCIF, has provided not-for-profit cultural organizations with financial support to help them become better rooted in their communities. These projects are intended to help them to be better equipped with tools to strengthen their management abilities, harness new technologies and diversify their revenues.

Celebrating ‘First Vines’ all season long

It was 400 years ago that grape vines were planted in Bear River by Louis Hébert —the first viniculture in North America.

In honour of the historical event, 400th anniversary celebrations entitled ‘First Vines’ are being hosted by Bear River Historical Society in conjunction with the Bear River Board of Trade and the 400th Anniversary Committee.

Committee chair Simone Wilson said the idea for the celebration grew out of conversations a number of years ago about the historical vine planting.
